North Florida’s springs, rivers, and parks are drawing large crowds as summer temperatures rise and outdoor recreation ramps up. To help protect these natural areas during the busy season, the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) is once again promoting its annual “Leave No Litter” campaign.
The initiative encourages visitors to do their part to preserve the region’s waterways and landscapes by cleaning up after themselves and leaving natural areas exactly as they found them.
Whether floating down the Ichetucknee River, kayaking on the Suwannee, or spending the afternoon along the Santa Fe River, visitors are reminded to pack out everything they bring in – including trash and disposable items.
Trash left behind near springs and rivers can do far more than spoil the scenery. Debris in waterways can disrupt water flow, contribute to pollution, threaten wildlife and create conditions that negatively affect recreation areas and aquatic ecosystems.
These impacts become even more significant during the summer months, when increased visitation places added pressure on North Florida’s most popular outdoor destinations.
Throughout the season, the District will share reminders and practical tips aimed at helping visitors reduce their environmental impact while enjoying the outdoors.
The campaign encourages the public to follow a few simple guidelines:
Properly dispose of all trash and personal items, including bottle caps, food wrappers, and other small debris.
Avoid stepping on or disturbing aquatic vegetation while swimming, snorkeling, or diving to help protect fragile habitats.
Stay on designated trails and paths to reduce erosion and prevent damage to natural areas.
Operate boats carefully in shallow water by lifting motors when appropriate to avoid harming vegetation and aquatic life.
District officials emphasize that protecting North Florida’s waterways starts with individual responsibility. Small actions – like carrying out trash and respecting marked recreation areas – can have a lasting impact on preserving these treasured natural resources.
The “Leave No Litter” campaign serves as a reminder that enjoying Florida’s outdoors also means helping care for them. By working together, residents and visitors alike can help keep the region’s springs and rivers clean, healthy and beautiful for generations to come.
